Dr. Joseph Mercola Believes that Exercise Fights Depression!

Depression can come upon a person without notice. It may be clinical, manic or situational depression, but a person can be affected physically and emotionally to the point of not functioning in the world all the same. There are many techniques and methods to help you pull away from depression - and exercise is one of them.

According to Dr. Mercola depression and exercise are polar opposites. One brings you down while the other makes you come alive. Research has shown that exercise is an effective weapon against depression.

Exercise helps you in your fight against depression by:

  • Increasing your self-esteem
  • Taking your mind off your concerns
  • Helping you release pent-up frustrations
  • Tiring you so you can sleep better

Dr. Mercola observes that depression can make exercising seem impossible. Someone who is depressed simply wants to stay in bed and sleep. But you need to begin to exercise to push depression out of your life! Don’t set an unrealistic goal - running several laps around the park is a good start. Also remember to do what you enjoy with your loved ones to make the road to recovery less bumpy.

If you find that exercise is still intimidating (one of the biggest hindrances for people who haven’t exercised in a long time is getting started): Walking is a wonderful way to get started. It is very low impact so it is easy on the joints.

For deep depression Dr. Mercola would not recommend using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) on your own, but rather as reinforcement while working with a trained EFT practitioner. Taking a look at Dr. Carrington's guidelines on selecting an EFT therapist would get your major questions answered. In addition, truly improving your diet is obviously an important step in treating depression, and another important consideration would be to make certain you are getting adequate supply of omega-3 fats.
